The Frank Reade “Land, Sea and Air Tour” Begins!

What could be better than an evening of high adventure with the near-mythic steampunk inventor Frank Reade, Jr? How about if such an event spanned three nights and involved some local steampunks, superheroes and pirates?

This is what you will get when you attend the “Land, Sea and Air Tour” book launch event for Paul Guinan and Anina Bennett’s new work, “Frank Reade: Adventures in the Age of Invention.”

Yes, we are talking that Paul Guinan and Anina Bennett. As in the same Portland duo that brought you the critically acclaimed book Boilerplate: History’s Mechanical Marvel and the Eisner Award–nominated science fiction comic book series Heartbreakers. Now the pair are delving back into a time before Jules Verne had his flying machines and H.G. Wells envisioned spaceships, to when the globe-trotting inventor Frank Reade became the original steampunk hero. Beginning in the mid-1870s and continuing for over forty years, Frank Reade magazines were the world’s first science fiction periodicals. Now Paul and Anina are bringing Frank and his progeny are back in a new book: Frank Reade: Adventures in the Age of Invention!

“A stunning multimedia confection of the highest order”
Publishers Weekly

To celebrate the release of this new book, the Guinan and Bennett have created a thoroughly unique launch event. Dubbed the “Land, Sea and Air Tour” the event will run three consecutive Wednesday’s this month. Not only will each night feature a separate theme of Land, Sea and Air at different local book stores, it will also have special guests to compliment the theme. And yes, this does include PDXYAR. On the 15th of February, we will not only be providing our own brand of piratical fun for the “Sea” themed night, but Paul will be actually engaging in a battle with the crew of El Tiburon, while playing the part Frank Reade, Jr!

Obviously you will want to be at Bridge City Comics for that, but before you start thinking of what night to attend, might we strongly suggest that you attend all three. You see, there’s a prize at the Feb. 22 grand finale event. When you attend this Wednesday’s event at Floating World Comics for the “Land” event, with special guests Rose City Steampunks, Local 23, you will get a “Land, Sea, and Air” passport. Get your passport stamped at all three events and you will be qualified to win a special prize. The first ten adventurers who make it to all three events and get their “Land, Sea, and Air” passports stamped will receive a print of an original Frank Reade engraving signed by both authors, plus custom-stamped Frank Reade chocolate “gold coins” (which will also be available for purchase).
