PDXYAR Invades Opera Theater Oregon

Black Friday is coming and if you really think about the concept, it really is sort of a pirate holiday. PDXYAR will be out in force, but the crew will not be chasing elusive retail booty. Instead we will be raising the black flag over not one, but two events on Friday. The first of these events kicks off at 7pm at the Mission Theater:

To start off the evening we will be joining Opera Theater Oregon for the premiere or their new series OPERA vs. CINEMA! Join us for pre-show sea shanties sung by PDXYAR and the OTO gang. There will also be a pirate costume contest and pirate-themed drink specials such as the Extra Special Booty. Once you are filled with rum and ale and your ears are burning with the singing of 19th century vulgarity the the movie will start.

The film. the classic silent film “The Black Pirate” (the 1926 silent film, starring Douglas Fairbanks) will have the live improvised accompaniment by renowned pianist Doug Schneider. Doug will be improvising from Richard Wagner’s broody opera “Der fliegende Holländer” (The Flying Dutchman).

After the show you can follow the crew down to Maher’s Irish Pub for pirates, shanties and booze!

When: Friday, November 25th
Time: Doors open at 6pm and the show starts at 7pm
Where: The Mission Theater
Cost:Tickets are $9
Tickets: Online Tickets can be ordered here

Pirates! at the Space Room with a Swashbuckler’s Ball Twist

Tonight PDXYAR and the Dangerous Kids will present our monthly invasion of Space Room Lounge with a special Swashbuckler’s Ball twist.

Come out to the Space Room to join us and you will be able to take part in a door prize-type drawing for free Swashbuckler’s Ball tickets. Now, as always costumes are not required for this event, but if you garb up you will get the first shot at the tickets.

If the usual piratical fun, added to the free tickets, is not enough to bring you out tonight, then wait- that’s not all. Tonight a new cocktail will be unveiled! Come out and try “The Seacrest.” I can’t tell you what is in it, but I predict that tomorrow you will most likely see hashtags blaming the “The Seacrest” for all manner of evil after effects.

So to review:

Tonight: 9pm-2am at the Space Room Lounge
4800 SE Hawthorne Blvd., Portland

Attractions: Pirates, a drawing for free SwashBall tickets (dress like a pirate for your best chances) and “The Seacrest”

PDXYAR Invades Maher’s Irish Pub

Perhaps there is no more fitting way to cap off a week started at Salvador Molly’s for International Talk Like a Pirate Day than to raid a family run restaurant and pub that strives to maintain the traditions of a small Irish Pub. That’s right, this Friday PDXYAR will invade Maher’s Irish Pub!

Now, if you are curious as to why I say this is “fitting” allow me to wax historical for a moment. If you look back around the time of the Golden Age of Piracy, you find that England strove mightily to keep the people of both Ireland and Scotland under its boot through oppressive laws, a legal system that favored the English and even outright thuggery. The resulting conditions in both subjugated countries provided a fertile environment for men and women to be drawn to lawless pursuits such as piracy.

“Oh, Mrs. McGraw,” the captain said,
“would you like to make a pirate out of your son, Ted?
With a scarlet cloak and a fine cocked hat,
Oh, Mrs. McGraw wouldn’t you like that?”
Mrs. McGraw
Traditional Sea Shanty of Irish Origin

Most of the Irish pirates gained little notoriety, but there were some that did.  One such pirate was Grace O’Malley, who in the 1500’s brought here clan out of poverty through piracy.  “The Hen” as she became known, used a fleet of oar driven galley ships to plunder the seas outside the important seaport of Galway.  So effective where her exploits that the English diverted forces from its war with Spain and France to protect their “home waters.”

To describe another notable Irish pirate I will call upon PDXYAR’s own Master Historian:

“Irishman Edward Seegar was known in the pirate world as Edward England.  He was a pirate who joined forces with Captains Le Bouche and Taylor and plundered around the Cape of Good Hope capturing over a dozen vessels, including the Royal James, and the 34 gun Fancy.  His career as captain ended when, because of an act of kindness (we all know the Irish are a kind folk), he was removed from the position of captain and marooned.  In early, 1721 he was reduced to begging and living off the kindness of strangers.  A broken man, he died not long afterward in Madagascar.”

Master Robert “Cockroach” Blair

How about just one more vaguely important act of piracy.  In his excellent work, “How the Irish Saved Civilization” Thomas Cahill, lays out his case for how Europe was able to climb out of the Dark Ages because Ireland had been a storehouse for learning and a repository for books.  The reason for this remote island to have become so rich in knowledge was the introduction of Christianity by the patron Saint of Ireland, Patrick.   Patrick was not from Ireland though.  He was born the son of a Deacon in Wales, but was taken in a raid by Irish pirates and brought back to Ireland to become a slave.   After six years of tending sheep, and talking with God, Patrick escaped Ireland only to return some years later to spread the Word and to ignite a passion for books and learning in the people of Ireland.

Thus, if we follow this argument, had Patrick not been taken by pirates he would have never have brought Christianity, and learning, to Ireland.  If the Irish had not been so taken with knowledge Europe would not have emerged from the Dark Ages as it did.  There would have been no Renaissance and the world would not be the place it is today.

In effect, one could make the claim that Irish Pirates saved Western Civilization.

Is it fitting that we should end the week of International Talk Like a Pirate Day with a raid on an Irish Pub?  Yeah, I think so.

So, join the crew of PDXYAR as we descend upon Maher’s Irish Pub for an evening of celebration, shanties, piratical fun and Guinness!  We shall make port this Friday, September 23. If weather is glorious, we’re be there from 7 until 9pm on the patio, if weather is less stellar, we be inside from 9 until 11pm.

What: PDXYAR Invades Maher’s Irish Pub

When: Friday, September 23 from 7:00pm -9:00pm (with Fair Seas) 9 -11pm (in foul weather)

Where: Maher’s Irish Pub- 352 B Ave, Lake Oswego OR 97034

Seafair Pirates Landing

This weekend when Seattle’s Seafair Pirates land at Alki Beach PDXYAR will be there. With the events kicking off at 9:30 this Saturday, the pirates are scheduled to storm the beach between 11:30 and 12:30pm (seriously, did you expect pirates to get up earlier than that?) and mark the official opening of the Seafair Season

PDXYAR will be a part of the street fair again this year. Visit with us at our booth and engage us over a piratical game or two. Besides the Liar’s Dice, this weekend will mark the return of the Epic Scale Pirates game! Of course, you can always expect the possibility of a spontaneous shanty or maybe even random sword fight. We will be there from around 9:30 (or as soon as the Captain manages to shake the crew loose from the racks) and will be there until they kick us out.

Getting there:

Can’t Make It?

Now, we certainly understand if you are not able to follow us up to Seattle for the day, but if you can’t that leaves you no excuses! This weekend also marks the premiere of Trek in the Park. Don’t miss, “Mirror, Mirror,” or the bad, bearded Spock will know…

D&D Camp!

There have been very few times in my life that I have wished I was 12 years-old again. One such rare occurrence came recently when I learned that Guardian Games is offering a learn-to-play Dungeons and Dragons summer camp for kids 12 to 15.

Guardian Games will have two camps to offer this summer. The first camp will be July 11th – 15th, 2011, with the second coming August 15th – 19th, 2011. For both sessions, camp will run from 1:00pm to 5:00pm each day.

With a cost of $125 for five days camp which is sure to afford many amazing adventures in roleplaying. Players/Campers will receive everything they need to roleplay including the official Dungeons and Dragons Player Handbook, their very own D&D dice set of their choice, a mini-figure to represent their character, character sheets, power cards and much… MUCH more.

There is no experience required and imagination is the only limit.

Space is limited to the first 16 players to sign up for each camp, so pull on your Boots of Speed, click your heels and get down to Guardian Games to gather more information and sign up (Note: sign up is only available in the store)
