Parades, (Seafair) Pirates and Bars!

Call it fate, call it luck, call it karma, this weekend something will happen on the streets of Portland that has not been witnessed in a generation. You might have heard rumors, but I am writing to lay it all out.

Yes, this weekend the Seattle Seafair Pirates will return to the Starlight Parade. After an absence of decades (which may, or may not, have had something to do with the Statute of Limitations) our brethren from the north will be making port in Stumptown this very night and we call upon all skallywags to join PDXYAR in making them feel welcome in our fair city.

Tonight, after 9pm, you will be able to find our two crews at the Pirates Cove for libations and entertainment. Just remember to pace yourself. It is going to be a very busy weekend.

Tomorrow night, PDXYAR will be join the Seafair Pirates in the Starlight Parade. In fact, keep a weather eye as we will also have crew marching with the Portland Geek Council and the Pirates of Portlandia.

Now, after the parade you might just want to take a Sharpie and write your address on your arm in clear, bold letters. This will be most helpful in the event you experience difficulties communicating it to the cab driver at the end of the night. Think I am joking? Then you have never seen the Seafair Pirates and PDXYAR team up to raid pubs together!

So, make sure you are following PDXYAR on Twitter ( because we will be tweeting our locations and destinations.

PDXYAR to Set Up Camp at OMSI this Weekend

Just last weekend we looked back in time and raided the 16th century. Now this coming weekend we are gazing into the future by appearing at OMSI’s Mini Maker’s Faire. OMSI describes the event as, “Portland Mini Maker Faire is the Greatest Show (and Tell) on Earth,” and judging from the list of makers this weekend will certainly be that.

As you stroll the Faire, you will find representation from all walks of “making”. From PARTS (the Portland Area Robotics Society), to Hand Eye Supply’s Curiosity Club, to Don Anderson’s one million volt Tesla Coil, to the Minon’s Plush Dolls and even our good friend’s Trackers PDX, means that you will find something to interest and inspire you at OMSI this weekend. In fact, there will be something to excite every member of your family.

The Mini Makers Faire is an event that is devoted to “invention, creativity and resourcefulness” or pretty much all the things that makes a pirate successful (well, yes, ruthlessness helps- but we’ll talk about that later. After this family friendly event) so of course PDXYAR jumped at the chance to sign on to this great event. We will be there on both Saturday and Sunday with a living history encampment, Liar’s Dice and two cannon shows each day (these will be at 1:50 PM and 3:50 PM on both Saturday and Sunday).

When: Saturday and Sunday, September 14-15, 2013 from 10am-5pm
Cost: $12 for adults; $8 for youth (3-17) and seniors (63+)
Where: OMSI Parking lot- Southeast Water Avenue, Portland, OR

UPDATED: PDXYAR Raids the 16th Century

Now before you become racked with worry that the crew has stumbled upon an unlocked Tardis, let me qualify that title. This very weekend the Oregon Renaissance Festival of Hillsboro will hosting a pirate-themed weekend and PDXYAR shall indeed be a part of their re-creation of a 16th century European village. Luckily for you, you can join us in Hillsboro at the Washington County Fairgrounds.

PDXYAR will be working out of our own encampment (mostly likely annoying the neighbors) and will be up to our usual frivolity. Come by for a game of Liar’s Dice, some rousing sea shanties and one, or more, of the pair of black powder shows we’ll be doing each day.

Here is the schedule of events for this weekend.

Where’s Redgoat?

Yes, it is something of a pirate version of “Where’s Waldo,” but this time we are seeking our errant captain.

Luckily for you, oh fortunate reader of this post, I am going to let you in on the secret. While on ashore, Redgoat, perhaps after too much grog, strayed into a Faerie Ring and has been transported to another land (this is probably what Riker worried about every time Captain Picard insisted on going on the away mission).

Fortunately, we have found where he was transported and it is a good place to be. This very weekend the captain (Redgoat, not Jean-Luc- just wanted to be clear there) will be joining our most excellent mates over at Sock Dreams for Faerieworlds.

Sock Dreams

Come find him in the Sock Dreams booth, where you should be going anyway (you can score some inside info on their gift card give-a-way here), where he will be handing out PDXYAR Trading Cards and stickers.

Pirates Make Camp at the Pacific Northwest Scottish Highland Games

Fancy a toss of the caber, a put of the stone or perhaps hearing the haunting measures of a massed pipe band? If such things sing within the halls of your woad painted soul, or even if you just are be slightly less enthusiastic, fortune smiles upon you this weekend as it is time for the Pacific Northwest Scottish Highland Games.

Now, not only can you take in the pipers and heavy athletics, you also will have the opportunity to watch dancers displaying their skills in both Highland and National Dance, delight in harpers competing in the NW Regional Harp Finals, delve into Scottish history and culture with presentations of Scottish Heritage, see fabulous bands perform and much-much more. Part of the “more” this year will be just a dash of pirates.

Fjord Porkins, Mr. Alonzo, Gracie Hawkins will be leading a crew to team up with the Northwest Mercenaries to establish a “working pirate” living history encampment. They will be bringing along a ship-full of armament, including some cannons, which causes one to wonder if they will be finding the chance to fire something off… One can never tell with those mates.

If not a drop of Scottish blood drips through your veins, be not troubled about attending this event. The Games are a celebration and everyone is welcome to take part. And if that is not incentive enough- there will indeed be beer!

Take a look at the video below and then decide to join us in Enumclaw, Washington this weekend.
