With the temps hitting triple digits here in PDX most folks are looking for ways to avoid the heat. Sure, you could seek the the shade like an overheated lion on the savanna, but PDXYAR has a better option for you. In fact we have two!

The Rockaway Beach Pirate Festival

Once again PDXYAR is returning to the streets of Rockaway Beach for the Rockaway Beach Pirate Festival and this year we have a very full schedule. The crew will be performing black powder demonstrations, a gunnery show and even fire dancing. Join us on Saturday night for a beach bonfire and later for a pub raid on the Sand Dollar Lounge.

This is a pirate event you do not want to miss!

And on top of that the tempatures will only be in the 70s.

And then there is that other option I mentioned…

Seafair Pirates Landing

If you are looking for a more northerly course this weekend, PDXYAR also has crew at Alki Beach to support our mates of the Seattle Seafair Pirates in their annual Seafair Pirates Landing.

The Great Figgy Pudding Caroling Competition

After an eight-teen year hiatus, The Great Figgy Pudding Caroling Competition is returning to Pioneer Courthouse Square this Friday night. Starting at 6pm, rain or shine, you will find carolers at select corners along SW Yamhill & Morrison Streets. These groups will be listened to by roaming judges and the best of them will be invited on stage for a “carol-off.”

As one might imagine the opportunity for fame and glory, not to mention a cashy money first prize, has captured the attention of Portland’s Premiere Privateers. Thus, the PDXYAR crew will be garbing up to enter the fray.

Now this is where you come in. This is audience participation event and we need you to come out and cheer us on.

Seriously, do you want some stuffy team singing traditional carols to win? Worse yet, what if there is an evil cabal of hipsters conspiring to ensnare the minds of the judges with a dark sorceries, win the competition and ruin Christmas for all time!

This is PDX, it is far more appropriate to have a bunch of pirates singing ditties such as “God Rest Ye Merry Privateers,” “Deck the Ships” and of course the perennial favorite “Cannon Balls” to walk away with the trophy.

So, fill your favorite flask with Christmas Cheer and come out to lend us your acclaim this Friday night!

The Weekend of Glory Part Deux!

As if PDXYAR falling upon the unsuspecting citizens of a picturesque coastal town for the Rockaway Beach Pirate Festival was not enough for one weekend we are also sending a boat crew north again. This time the destination is a little place called Alki Beach.

Alonzo, Gracie and Jerry will be leading their crew to Seattle Seafair to provide the Seafair Pirates with a cannon salute as they come ashore under the leadership of this year’s captain, Captain Kidd (Marvin Davis).

When: Saturday June 28th between 11:30 and 12:30
Where: Alki Beach- 1702 Alki Ave SW, Seattle, WA

The Rockaway Pirate Festival

Imagine, if you will, it is the year 1716. You are standing on the edge of a small coastal town, your eyes cast seaward. You spy a ship standing at anchor, she bobs languidly in the ebbing tide. Her sails are neatly furled and few walk the decks, but wisps of smoke still rise from her larboard side cannons to be taken by the westerly breeze..

Closer in to shore a pair of cutters slice their way through the frothing surf on the strong pull of the sweeps. As they slide onto the the unprotected beach their crews rush forth with weapons drawn. With swords, boarding ax, musket and pistol held aloft the pirates stride into town like they own the place…

Because they do.

While the PDXYAR Q Branch has yet to perfect our time travel device so you may experience this scene in person, we do have something that comes in at a close second- The Rockaway Beach Pirate Festival.

Happening this very weekend, not only is this a great fest, it is the closest Pirate Festival to PDX happening this year. Do not question it, just gather your crew and run for your favorite mode of conveyance.

What will be waiting for you on the coast? How about the triumphant return of the PDXYAR black powder show! We’ll have a cannon and small arms line setup and will be doing a total of 4 shows. We will also have We’ll have a tent/booth setup with Liar’s Dice and an opportunity for kids to “join the crew” of El Tiburon. On top of that are two evening shows on Friday and Saturday night, pub raids, train raids and more.

Don’t delay! Make plans for the coast this weekend!

When: June 27th, 28th and 29th
Cost: FREE! (No entry fee, Rum extra)
Where: Downtown Rockaway Beach

The Weekend of GLORY!

Few times in the history of the entire world has so much transpired in a single weekend. In fact, there is so much happening scientists fear that a single weekend will fail to hold it, shattering the days into sharp fragments which will actually rip a hole in the universe itself. The only way to prevent the end of times is for each and every one of you to get out there and have as much fun as you can.

To that end, allow us to suggest a couple of ways to have great amounts of fun.

Rusty Scupper Pirate Daze

Captain Porkins will be leading a boat crew north to the shores of Westport, Washington today for the kick off the Rusty Scupper Pirate Daze. He and the crew will be on site all weekend at their encampment, located between the Outragous Fortune and the Jade Dragon Pirates. They will also be performing cannon shows (click here for a complete schedule of events) on all three days. If you make the trek up on Saturday there is a chance that you might be able to see our Captain in a tiny ship for a Mini Brig Battle.

PGC3 Geek Olympathon

olympathon

Now, if you are unable to hear the sounding of the cannons with Captain Porkins, fear not. For this Saturday marks the return of a cherished event. It is when whole of Stumptown becomes a battleground of physical prowess and intellectual adroitness. It is the PGC3 Geek Olymathon.
Grab your bat’leth, pocket your copy of the Shadow Proclamation and load your team into the Quinjet for it all goes down this weekend.

Yes, the Olypathon is back and it is indeed better than ever. The competitive events list is long and distinguished. With challenges such as the iDope’s “Smart Phone Phorge”, Geek in the City’s “Name that Geek Tune”, Guardian Games’ “Defend the Game Shop” and much more (see the full lineup here), there is sure to be something to challenge even the most stalwart Geeks.

PDXYAR will once again be providing our pair of signature events; Liar’s Dice and the Scallywag Hunt.

Lair’s Dice
Between noon and 2pm you will be able to find crew members at the Magic Garden and from 2:30pm until 5 in the courtyard outside Bridge City Comics, waiting to take on all comers in a rousing game of Liar’s Dice. One member of your team can challenge the crew to a game with glory on the line. Each game should last around 20 minutes (if you are lucky).

Scallywag Hunt
Think of it as a scavenger hunt where you use clues to find piratical scallywags brazenly hiding somewhere in Portland. We will post first the identity of the target scallywag on Twitter and then provide a series of three progressively easier clues to help you locate them. Your objective is to locate the target, take a photo with him or her and then post it to Twitter (hash tagged with #scallywaghunt). We will be awarding first, second and third place medals in each of the three rounds that will run between noon and 5pm. Each team can only medal once in this event. While you may only win one medal in this event, you can attempt to place higher and trade up your medal.

Remember to follow @pdxyar on Twitter to participate in this event and to receive updates on all the latest piratical happenings.
